# Inspection Setup

> Configure your inspection defaults, areas, rooms, categories, and severity definitions.

Inspection Setup lets you configure the default settings and checklists used when creating inspections in InspectIQ.

Taking a few minutes to review these settings can help keep your inspections consistent and reduce repetitive setup.

## Access Inspection Setup

1. Select **Settings** from the main navigation.
2. Select **Business Settings**.
3. Choose **Inspection Setup** from the left-hand menu.

You'll see four expandable sections: **Defaults**, **Area / Room Library**, **Inspection Categories**, and **Severity Definitions**.

## 1. Defaults

Expand **Defaults** to review your default inspection settings.

| Setting | Description |
| - | - |
| **Default Inspection Type** | The inspection type used to prefill new Work Orders. |
| **Default Inspection Duration (Hours)** | The estimated duration of an inspection, in hours. |
| **Default Reminder** | Controls whether clients receive an automatic reminder before their scheduled inspection. |
| **Team Notifications** | Controls whether you receive copies of your team members' inspection activity emails. |

### Team Notifications

Turn on **Email me about my team's inspection activity** to receive copies of activity emails for your team members, including agreement activity, payments, completed inspections, and booking updates.

Your own Work Order emails are always sent regardless of this setting.

## 2. Area / Room Library

The **Area / Room Library** contains the areas, rooms, and checklist items available when conducting inspections.

InspectIQ includes a starting library organized into area groups such as Exterior, Interior, Roof / Attic, and Mechanical.

Each area or room can contain checklist items to guide the inspection process.

### Add an Area or Room

1. Expand **Area / Room Library**.
2. Select **+ Add Area / Room**.
3. Enter a **Name** for the new area or room.
4. Select its **Area Group**.
5. Optionally, enter a short **Description**.
6. Select **+ Add checklist item** to add inspection checklist items as needed.
7. Select **Create**.

Your new area or room will appear in the library under its selected area group.

### Edit or Delete an Area or Room

Find the area or room in the library and select:

* **Edit** to update its configuration.
* **Delete** to remove it from the library.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Changes to the Area / Room Library affect future inspections only. Inspections already created keep their existing checklist snapshot.

### Customize Your Checklists

Checklist items provide a starting point for inspectors when reviewing an area or room.

You can configure checklist items in the library, and inspectors can edit their checklist items within individual inspections.

> [!TIP]
>
> Review the existing library before adding new areas or rooms. InspectIQ already includes common inspection areas and checklists that you can customize to match your workflow.

## 3. Inspection Categories

**Inspection Categories** classify findings by the building system they relate to.

For example:

* Structural
* Roofing
* Plumbing
* Electrical
* Heating & Cooling (HVAC)
* Interior

Categories are different from Area Groups:

* **Area Groups** organize where an inspection takes place.
* **Inspection Categories** identify which building system a finding relates to.

### Add a Category

1. Expand **Inspection Categories**.
2. Scroll to **Add Category**.
3. Enter a category name.
4. Select **Add**.

To modify an existing category, select **Edit** beside its name. Select **Delete** to remove a category.

## 4. Severity Definitions

**Severity Definitions** describe the importance or urgency of inspection findings and are used across findings and reports.

InspectIQ includes five severity levels:

| Severity | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Informational** | General information; no action required. |
| **Minor** | Minor defect or wear; routine maintenance recommended. |
| **Moderate** | Moderate concern; recommend further evaluation and correction. |
| **Major** | Major concern; recommend correction by a qualified professional. |
| **Safety** | Safety hazard; recommend immediate evaluation by a qualified professional. |

Expand **Severity Definitions** to review the available levels and their descriptions.

## Before Your First Inspection

We recommend reviewing the following:

* Your default inspection type and duration.
* Your client reminder preference.
* The areas and rooms included in your library.
* The checklist items available for each area.
* The categories used to classify findings.
* The severity definitions used in reports.

Once these settings are configured, you're ready to start creating Work Orders and conducting inspections.

> [!NOTE]
>
> You can return to Inspection Setup as your business needs change. Remember that Area / Room Library updates apply to newly created inspections, not inspections already in progress.
